Finally leaving Ontario

We left the top side of Lake Superior at Thunder Bay and headed inland through the rocky Canadian Shield.  (#6 above in periwinkle blue)

We crossed the Manitoba Border eventually,   11  days after we left #1 son's house south of Ottawa.  The first night in Manitoba province (#7 above in grey) we stayed at West Hawk Lake that was created by a meteor many eons ago.  The park had some interesting trails.

The deer in the park were too friendly.  Hunting season will open soon and they are not afraid of  humans.                                                                     We left this provincial park with the lovely eco-friendly shower house and headed out onto the prairies.  Turtle Island is a First Nations' symbol for Mother Earth.  At first it is rolling farmland but soon it becomes very flat.  The roads in Manitoba are terrible.  A sign at one business said, "Visitors, Sorry About the Crappy Roads".  We finally left the secondary roads as we tired of the bumping, but even the Trans-Canada was a disgrace.  The Federal government needs to do something about the poor impression this gives tourists.
Most of the harvesting was finished. We drifted along and went around the north side of Winnipeg to see the Selkirk area.

  1. Has your harvest been as poor as ours ? With all the rain we had in the summer together with the lack of sun our corn crop etc is on the poor side. This will of course impact on food prices in the next month or so including the cost of meat ...

    1. Most places across the country had drought conditions earlier in the year. The rains came when we were visiting/camping of course. The farmers and ranchers I talked to didn't seem too discouraged. Some crops were the best ever, but it seems most were slightly below norm. We did notice how brown all the deciduous trees were and everybody was saying the fall colours would not be good this year, but they were wrong.

    2. It sounds as though it could be just the UK that has been badly hit.

  2. Interesting to see the hay covered in plastic (is that plastic?). I've not seen that before. Maybe that's not what that is at all....

I hope the beautiful deer stay in the campground during hunting season! Amazing that you could get that close.

Wishing you continued safe travels! Thanks for the update and wonderful photos!

    1. Yes that is white plastic. It is something we started to see about 15 years ago and has caught on. It just keeps the weather from ruining the bales.

  3. Such beautiful pictures, I love your travels. So much here reminds me of Michigans upper peninsula where I grew up

  4. This is a trip I have always wanted to take, but with my husband losing his drivers license it is not likely. I appreciate all the more the opportunity to travel along with you!
